It is no coincidence that many businesses are started by more than a single individual. There are certain advantages that come with starting and running a business with multiple people.

Besides the fact that you have twice as many people to do the work and twice the talent, you have someone you can rely on. In an earlier article we discussed how important passion is for starting a business, and this is crucial, but having a business partner you also have someone to motivate you and keep you going.

Every new business hits a point where the person starting it begins to lose motivation and becomes worn out. It is easy for a business to stop progressing at this point and for things to start to unravel, but when you have a business partner to keep you going it is more likely you will survive these rough patches.

It is amazing to me that when one business partner seems to be unmotivated and losing interest, the other one usually is going strong and is able to pick the other one up. Most likely these roles will change at some point, but the fact that you are not going through it alone is reassuring.

I have started multiple businesses, but have always had the good fortune of starting one with someone else rather then just by myself. Looking back on it, this was not always a conscious decision, but fortunate that there was always someone else there to start it with.

Having been through this process multiple times though, I know that I would most likely never start a business nowadays just by myself.

Sure, there are some benefits to starting a business by yourself such as a bigger piece of ownership, but these benefits are not always what they are cracked up to be. Even though you are splitting the ownership, the benefits of having someone else to help you start and manage a business is worth more than you can put a price on.

If you have started numerous businesses in the past and want to start a new one on your own, then I will not argue that you cannot do it, but I know for myself that the benefits, motivation and reassurance that comes with a business partner is worth more than trying to do it alone.

Just be careful when selecting a business partner, do not just go out and find anyone so you do not have to go it alone. You need to carefully choose your business partner and make sure it is someone you can trust and work with.

The joy, satisfaction and pleasure of starting a business is like few other experiences in life, but almost every business at one point or another will go through difficult times. Having a business partner to help through these various ups and downs is priceless, and can be the difference between your business failing or succeeding.
