Real World Problem Solving is the Key

It sounds so obvious and simple yet few new business ideas solve real world problems. Why?

I have been in the position where my new business venture did not solve a problem in high demand, so I can speak from experience. You come up with an idea that you think would be fantastic and is something you would really find useful. Yet you never take the time to check to see if it something anyone else wants or is looking for. At this point if you move forward without researching if your idea is in demand then you have Strike One.

Once you have an idea in mind, if you start working on it without researching if there is a market or demand for it, then chances are you will waste a lot of time.

When I first started I would come up with new ideas all of the time and I thought they were perfect so there must be a huge demand for it. I thought since I find it useful everyone will too, but it does not work that way.

I was so caught up in the excitement of the new business idea that I would rush off and start working on it. Then somewhere down the line when it got time to market it or refine the idea and I started checking around I would sometimes learn that there was no market for it. All of that time spent on something that most likely will have to scrapped, and the worst part is I could have saved myself the trouble by first doing a little research.

There is no excuse for not researching a new business idea nowadays. The internet makes it so simple to learn if there are other businesses already offering a similar product or service, or if people are searching for what you plan to offer. The little time it takes to do a check is well worth it. Besides, your idea is not going anywhere, if no one has thought of it before now, then I doubt someone will think about in the next hour while you check to see the demand for it.

I know this sounds like common sense and as I look back I sometimes want to smack myself for being so reckless and not doing this important step. You see we all can get a little prideful at times, and fall in love with our own ideas. Many ideas may indeed be great but they may not be practical or perhaps there is an easier way to do something and others do not want or need all of the bells and whistles you plan to offer. I have a prime example of trying to build the perfect product when in reality I only needed to build 5% of the product for it to be successful.

So the next time you get a great idea for your next business, first take a step back and ask yourself if it will solve a real world problem others are in need of. Spend a little time researching it on the internet and ask others what they think of the idea. You might be surprised at the feedback you get and it might even push you in a new direction that you had not thought of before.

The business world is scattered with failed ideas. As you grow as a business person you not only become more efficient in running a business but also in learning when to walk away from an idea. Sometimes the best decision in business is not pursuing a new idea.
